Soma bay Golf
The Cascades is Soma Bay's Golf and Country Club which provides a sporting and social focal point for the peninsula's community, centering on one of Egypt's most stunning desert links-style golf courses.
The Gary Player designed course is the first in many ways in Egypt. Not only is it the first golf course open for play on the Western Red Sea coast, it is the first Championship Course in the Middle East designed by one of the "Big Three" (Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer). The 18 hole, par 72 course offers memorable views of the lush green fairways that contrast dramatically with the rugged desert and the clear blue sea waters.
At the inaugural tournament, Gary Player described the course as "the next Pebble Beach." In his book Gary Player’s Top Golf Courses of the World, his personal selection of 55 of the most memorable golf courses around the globe, The Cascades Championship Course was referred to as "the Red Sea Treasure." The Cascades was recently ranked among the Top 5 golf courses in the world by the readers of "Golf Journal."
Adjacent to the Championship course, is the 9 hole, Par 3 Challenge Course, also designed by Gary Player, that offers both the beginner and the more advanced golfer the opportunity to practice a variety of shots with emphasis on the short game. The Par 3 Challenge Course serves the Golf Academy where individual and group tuition by PGA Golf Professionals is available. There are also extensive practice facilities, including a 60 bay driving range, and several putting and pitching practice greens.
The Cascades Club House located at the golf resort, La Résidence des Cascades, that sits at the center of the Championship Course, includes extensive changing room facilities with showers, golf lockers available for rent by the day or week, a wide range of golf merchandise at the Pro Shop as well as essential rentals; golf clubs, trolleys & electric carts. A free shuttle bus service is available from all the hotels at Soma Bay to The Cascades.
The Cascades Championship Golf Course features at least four different tee positions on each hole according to ability: white, yellow, black and red. See pictures and drawings of the greens in the hole by hole description or by clicking on the numbers on the map below.
Perhaps the most successful golfer of his generation, Gary Player is one of only five golfers ever to win the Career Grand Slam of Golf, (along with Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.)
A courageous style of play fired by a fiercely competitive nature, an always courteous demeanour and a penchant for black attire on the golf course have given rise to the name by which Gary Player is known throughout the world— The Black Knight.
His nine Major titles include three Masters, three British Opens, (spanning three decades), two PGA Championships, and one US Open. Among his more than 150 titles from around the globe are 21 PGA Tour victories. Equally successful has been his playing career on the PGA Senior Tour - his 22 titles include three PGA Senior Championships and two US Senior Opens.
Beauty and Tranquility
Gary Player currently devotes a great deal of time to designing world-class golf courses that are both challenging and a pleasure to play. His credo for golf architecture is beauty and tranquility, an objective which is the hallmark of all elements at Soma Bay. He believes in a course with an interesting mix of shots that tests the imagination and strategic skills of all levels of golfers.
